Time Machine wont start up when clicked on in dock

Pondini solves the issue. Other common Time Machine issues can be found here.

That’s quite strange. :(

There must be something damaged in your installation of OSX. I’d suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.6 “combo” update. That’s the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that’s gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal “point” updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349 Be sure to do a Repair Permissions via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

If that doesn’t help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won’t affect anything else), then apply the “combo” again.

Did you know that Time Machine works great with many third party NAS?

iTunes 10.1.0.56 update kills network interface – Windows 7

Image via Wikipedia

Apple – Support – Discussions – iTunes 10.1.0.56 update kills network …. TG10987 has the solution.  Nice write up.

I have resolved this.

For anyone having the issue, here’s what appears to be happening based on running iTunes setup with verbose logging turned on and watching the time when the network interface dies.

Issue:
During the installation, iTunes installs some network components related to mobile device support over ethernet(Apple Mobile DeviceEthernet Service – netaapl.inf). At the same time, according the logs, the install process removed OEM18.inf. This almost exactly coincided with the time that I saw the network connection die (preceded it by a few seconds).

Basically, iTunes appears to be removing a required network component.

Resolution:
After installing iTunes and the network connection breaking, remove the network device from Device Manager and allow Windows to reinstall it automatically.

The following instructions are for Windows 7, but they are close enough to follow for other versions of Windows.

1. Click the Start button (Jewel in Vista and Win7).
2. Right-click Computer and click Manage in the menu that appears (type your password or click Yes if prompted).
3. On the left side of hte Computer Management window, click Device Manager.
4. Click the arrow (or plus sign) next to Network Adapters to expand that section.
5. Right-click your network adapter and click Uninstall in the menu that appears.
6. Click OK.
7. Reboot.

Hide a BootCamp Windows Partition from the OS X Desktop – Bits of Tech

Timeline of Unix History

Hide a BootCamp Windows Partition from the OS X Desktop – Bits of Tech.  Kind of cool suggestions.  Much easier than other suggestions I have read.  From the article:

After digging around on Google a bit, I found a few ways to do it. The easiest of which is to simply log into your Windows environment and rename the C drive to something like .Windows. This works because UNIX- and Linux-based systems assume that any file or folder beginning with a . (period) are meant to be hidden. The advantage to this method is the change doesn’t cause the partition not to be mounted, so it’s still accessible if you want to copy files from the NTFS partition.

Can’t install Office 2010? (via Nomad Computer Repair Blog)

Two ways to fix it. Use a third party uninstaller or probably the faster Microsoft Fix option with the link included in the article.

Can't install Office 2010? Recently I attempted installing Office 2010 on an Windows 7 box. Dashboard and no widgets showing

Ansgar Hoeber provided his own solution.

Hi out there.
I solved my problem as follows:
I booted from the MacOS 10.6.2 install disk delivered with my MPB and started the installer. I unchecked ALL items except those one which check box was greyed (basic software).
After rebooting from hard disk, I applied the MacOS 10.6.3 update and reinstalled Safari 5.
A new reboot, and everything was fine…
Due to my “research” in the internet I come to the conclusion that my problem was arised by a damaged “WebKit framework” and its associated components.

Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes.

On Apple iTunes 9 do you get the following errors?

“Apple Application Support was not found.

Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.”

To solve this do what cr4z33 said:

“I found the solution myself!

1. Download and install WinRAR.
2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose “Open with WinRAR”.
3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose “Repair”.
4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally. “

Can’t reinstall from the install disk?

Pink computer mouse in the dark

This had a surprising answer.  It was the mouse!  ”Turned out to be a really simple fix. A few of the strange behaviors made me think it might have something to do with my mouse. Sure enough, I switched out my mouse and everything is working fine. I guess my old mouse (a 3rd party mouse by Evoluent) went haywire.”  You rarely suspect that kind of problem for this issue.  I was wondering if it might be some kind of damage like a disk or something.
