So is this WD fault or Firewire? Does this happen with other brands?

I was confused when a user recently decided to use a relatively new external hard drive, but it wasnt mounting on her computer. It looked like the computer didnt even recognize that the drive was attached. She was using a Mac, and Disk Utility wasnt seeing the drive at all when connected via FireWire 400. The odd thing was that I remembered partitioning the drive on my computer. As it turns out, there is an interesting issue, where USB (the me … Read More

Powerbook G4 Resurrected (via Notes En Route)

It is a great value how long these powerbooks have lasted. I would have loved to get one myself but I was not in that financial place when these came out. Oh well, I enjoy the several year old MacBook I have now. Even an older mac can be great fun can’t it?

Powerbook G4 Resurrected I am not really one to be attached to things, especially gadgets.  I consider my passport as my most important possession, the first thing I’m going to grab if I’m inside a burning building.  That is until six days ago, I spilled a venti-sized drip coffee in Starbucks on my Powerbook G4. I never talk about technology much.  I like my cellphone because I can call and send text messages, and take the occasional grainy photo you see on this blog (li … Read More

IBM T400 VS. Apple Macbook 5.1 Geekbench Results (via Berlin Open Computer Design)

It appears that the Hackintosh has the highest performance. Interesting. So clearly for those who don’t mind breaking the law, you get far more by using your own hardware/software combination. I wrote an earlier post that it wasn’t worth it here.

IBM T400 VS. Apple Macbook 5.1 Geekbench Results I had the chance to work with a new aluminum Macbook and also a new IBM T400 laptops. I like the Mac, question the Firewire omission, but am pleased with the over all build. The T400 is has the option for UMTS 3G WWAN access, fingerprint security, and Firewire, it is a ThinkPad and the style has not change much in 20 years. I ran the Geekbench app as I was using the machines and submitted them to my GB profile. That is a cool function of GB, anyw … Read More

Don’t Get a Drobo (via A Geek With Guns)

AEBS and Drobo

There are some very good RAID/DAS/NAS devices to use. I have written about the Synology here, the Pegasus here, Qnap here, Netgear here, Western Digital here, Buffalo here, or a NAS roundup here.

Since I have a massive amount of data on hand I’ve been spending a lot of time looking for an external multi-drive enclosure that either had RAID capabilities or something similar. Due to reading enough positive recommendations that had the Drobo been a person it would be nominated for sainthood I decided to go with one. A bit before Christmast I ordered a standard FireWire 800 four-bay Drobo using a $100.00 discount. I was going to run it for si … Read More
