good news: found the following solution

Navigate to ‘/Users//Library/Preferences’ and delete all com.apple.iChat* files. You must then log out for the fix to work and re-setup iChat the next time you log in. I’m pleased to report this solution does work and I can now open and close iChat without having to reenter my passwords each time it starts up.

I got it. System prefs>language and text>uncheck auto correct. Phew, I was going crazy for a minute. Hey Apple, we don’t need every iOS feature on our Macs. JC

This is helpful to know. Could save some time and effort if you need to help a family member with a Mac.

How to use iChat for Screen Sharing, etc iChat has proven very useful to me for doing “remote support” with clients. Using iChat one can do Screen Sharing, so not only can I “see” the screen of a clients computer, we also have audio ‘chat’ at the same time so we can get off the phone.
