If you don’t like Drive Genius this might be a good alternative. For $40 this might be a better choice than Drive Genius if you know your specific needs.

I have done this as well and it works great. You can also use external Hard drives as the destination media. Probably any bootable external storage would work really, possibly even a NAS/SAN.
For $89 this seems like a deal.The ability to use or restore information from a computer that has failed is a great feature.

This thread is very interesting if you have external storage drives and are having problems. Really you want to get external drives with the Oxford chipset like OWC sells. I wrote a separate post about my positive experiences with them here. If you avoid LaCie, WD, Iomega, Imation, Samsung, Drobo you should be fine. I have read stories about major problems with all of these brands. Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi seem to have the most reliable hard drives and enclosures at the present time.
