Stories from my past: I made a mistake

Often my simple mistakes, take huge efforts to fix. Today I was lucky, and got off easy.

I sometimes take the train when I go places, and today I forgot to get a round-trip ticket. No big deal I think, I will just get another one once I get to my destination. Well on my way back home, the train arrived early and I only had a few minutes to catch it. So I was glad that I caught it. Then as it was pulling out of the station I thought to myself “Wasn’t I supposed to buy a ticket?”

The conductor comes around and I explain that I made a mistake, but I didn’t have enough cash to pay her. So I have to get off at the next stop. Embarrassing! I get a return ticket and head home. On my way home, I have to transfer so I go to the ticket counter and explain that I owe them some money. That I didn’t pay for the first part of my trip, and that I went to the ATM to get some money to pay them. The lady who sells tickets is surprised and says “Oh but you don’t have to pay. The cost is the same because they are in the same area. It is really rare though that you were honest and told us.”

I made a mistake but I corrected it and continued on my way. May you also make minor mistakes, instead of major ones. If you make a major mistake though, that’s ok, no one is perfect.

Study: Ad networks not honoring do-not-track promises | Web | Macworld. When money is involved people seem to have problems keeping their promises. Maybe Network advertising are like politicians. I hope they don’t have to vote to raise the debt ceiling.

What does balance mean?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned in life is maintaining a balance on everything. Never going too far in one direction, and stopping to consider the consequences of the decisions that I made in the past.

I often have seen that qualities that people have which are a strength can be their weakness. In a reality show I watched once, I saw a creative man who could see possibilities in the things people threw away and he kept them. He had a noble intention to fix them and sell them, or give them away, but it got lost in all his other “projects”. His creative side allowed him to create things that didn’t exist, but he lacked the discipline and focus to carry through with the multitude of ideas he had.

The most helpful thing that I have found to be balanced is to stop and consider how my actions are affecting my reality. The things that make me happier in both short and long-term ways, I want to continue. If something makes me feel bad in short and long-term consequences then I don’t want to continue that. What surprises me about others is that I see others do things that don’t make their short or long-term happier, and indeed make their reality worse. It is sometimes hard to see where the satisfaction for their behavior comes in. Sometimes with friends I have asked them why they do certain things and they can’t explain it. I think that if you can’t explain how something makes your life better, it’s probably making it worse.

I think that deep down people know what is right and helpful to their life, but that they rationalize things away. I think the most helpful thing you can do for someone else is just to listen and remind them of the wisdom they already know.

Review of Central Desktop SaaS

Review of Central Desktop. I ran across a reference to central desktop in another article I read. I am not sure that business will want to pay $25 per user. If this could be self-hosted and less money then I would agree it would be a big seller. Still if you are a small company and you need to track collaboration it might do the job.

Guy asks for an app crack, developer gives him free copy instead – TNW Apps. A nice gesture and respect leads to an unexpected benefit. The user does bring up a good point. Some people don’t have a bank account or credit card by choice and who are legal. How can they buy software? I can’t repeat the app name here but here is a link.

It’s Coming: The 5 ATM Fee – Deal Journal – WSJ. Interesting strategy by banks. They are training us not to use them. The more you limit the reason a customer would use you, the more likely we are to just hold onto our money. Chase is testing a $5 fee in my state of IL. I wonder how that will go over?
