Interesting that it was caused by other third party software. Once the SanDisk Cruzer software was uninstalled it worked great.
This thread is very interesting if you have external storage drives and are having problems. Really you want to get external drives with the Oxford chipset like OWC sells. I wrote a separate post about my positive experiences with them here. If you avoid LaCie, WD, Iomega, Imation, Samsung, Drobo you should be fine. I have read stories about major problems with all of these brands. Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi seem to have the most reliable hard drives and enclosures at the present time.
This poster had some problems with the drive not mounting and other issues. To me, if an external drive seems unreliable I would sent it back and get a different one. I have seen way too many external HD fail soon after exhibiting weird behavior like this. I have never had any issues with any Seagate drive, internal or external.
