Hello everyone! I have instituted a new policy for subscribers to this website. I have been overrun by spammers who would register an account, and then do nothing with it. They wouldn’t post a comment, do a track-back, or do anything to show they were interested in interacting with the site. I then started to get posts with spam content from those registered accounts, which I manually deleted at first.

However times have changed. I am tired of deleting junk, so now if someone doesn’t comment on a post, do a track-back or any activity to interact with the site your account will be deleted after 7 days. Comment spam is a growing problem for blogs, and since I don’t have advertising this is costing me time/money that I won’t waste on garbage. I am using a great plugin called “User spam remover” which is working great. It automates deleting dead accounts.

Why have subscribers at all when people can subscribe to the RSS feed? Not everyone likes RSS and for some people its easier to get email notifications. Also by having subscribers I can reduce the amount of comment spam that I have to filter. Blogs take effort to maintain.

Has anyone got a spam email that said they wanted to buy your domain? I received that today as a generic email sent to my primary email account. I deleted it of course, because it is silly that someone would want to buy my domain. I don’t have enough traffic to make it worthwhile for a commercial interest. Spammers are getting more creative in trying to verify addresses aren’t they?

Also is anyone else getting spam emails from Poland and other countries? Is it just me, or has spam been less Nigerian money scams and more attempts to exploits public information?

The simple answer.

Mail can import mbox files. Outlook will export mbox files but only if the export is accomplished by dragging an Outlook mailbox into a new folder outside of Outlook. In my case, I dragged the entire Outlook Inbox into a new folder on the Desktop name “received”. I then used the Mail “File/Import Mailboxes/files in mbox format” command to locate the file insdie the “received” folder, which was an mbox file of all the messages inside the Outlook Inbox.

Interestingly, the effort lost 7 messages out of 2100 in the Inbox and 4 out of 700 in the Sent folder.

Work around for Pages not sharing via Mail.

I discovered that when I created a test pages document. ( This is a test and only a test of the Pages share via Mail script) and shared it via Mail all was well.

So it must be the org document I was working with.

I copied the content into a new blank and saved it under a different name. That worked

I got to thinking about this and tried the org document again it still would not work.

This time I re-saved it as another name. That also cured it.

I’m not sure what in the original document caused the fault. Could a file name cause it?

Thanks for the feed back

I ask because I just read an article that said that the number of online email jumped from around 4% in 2009, to 20% in 2010. I was thinking about this and my own history with email and I think I have some reasons why this is happening.

Levels of spam. If you don’t have great spam filtering which most desktop clients do not, you tend to get stuck with a high garbage to useful email ratio. Online filtering has been better than any kind of spam filtering on the client side, even using highly regarded spam filtering products.

Importance of email as a communications medium. Email has some good qualities, but I think that people are seeing the limits to sharing their data. Now with services like SugarSync, and cloud storage, one of the major reasons people use email (to move files) is becoming less important. People are creating videos on their phones/ipads/cameras and traditional email isn’t an easy way to transfer it. Most email providers have size limitations, and most people’s internet connections are not reliable/fast enough to make this process easy. So I think people are uploading their video to services like Dropbox or Google documents and sharing them from there.

Rise of Twitter/social networks, plugins to text for free on smartphones. I think that the immediate and easy nature of these apps bypass the ability of marketers to spam their messages. People are learning to control what information they take in, just to be able to deal with all of the information they are asked to absorb. So naturally they want to eliminate things like advertisements in Gmail, or things like Aol/Hotmail advertisements as well. They are using plugins in their browser to secure their privacy, and putting their numbers on Do not Call lists. People are sick of being spammed with email “newsletters” that every website seems to assume they want when they only want to finish reading an article they found interesting.

Email is an older application like Gopher, and like older applications, new generations want to explore new ways of communicating. With the mainstreaming of Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter, they are seeking new ways to connect. So apps that are mobile will probably be the new communication method. Younger people seem to like distributed and peer-to-peer applications that don’t depend on a central server to verify and maintain their information. Apps like Tiger text which provide anonymity I believe will grow even more popular.

I don’t see the death of email, since lots of older users like me find it easy. I do see it being subsumed by Skype, or other online video like FaceTime that is only a component of their full services. One day typing a message will seem as quaint as using a telegraph machine. Kids will ask, did you really have to “type” out messages? Why didn’t voice recognition just send it? Why indeed?

Perhaps it is because much of the writing I read on the internet is unfocused, or perhaps my attention span is decreasing.

As a reader what size of posts do you find the most valuable? I tend to like things between 500-1000 words myself. Anything less than 500 feels unsatisfying and very shallow. I know that I have been guilty of that in the past, so I am going to have longer articles unless I get feedback.

Since what is missing in my writing is stream of consciousness things I will incorporate more of those as well. I am watching a movie called “A New Life”. It is interesting so far. Has anyone else seen it?

I made that mistake 3 weeks ago. After a sales associate asked me to sign me up for the card to get a 10% discount for my friend, I started to receive emails the next day. I received an email each day until the 4th day I had enough. I called up and asked for my email address to be deleted and I did not wish to be contacted.

“No problem buddy” he said. ”It is effective immediately.”

Imagine my surprise the next day when I kept receiving emails about their online service. I called back and explained how I had contacted them before. ”Oh well it can take up to 7 days to stop.” After that it will stop.

Guess what happened the next week? That’s right, everyday they sent me emails. A week and a day later I called back. ”This is the third time that I’ve called about this issue. I don’t wish to be contacted. Please remove my email.”

“Of course sir.” the woman responded. ”You don’t want to use your online account?”

“No. I just want to get the 10% discount. Please just delete my email.” I asked nicely.

“If you do then you won’t be able to set up an account.” she said. At this point I began to wonder if they felt their customers were stupid or if she was just reading from a script.

“I understand that. I was tricked to give my email address. What do I have to do to take it off?” I asked.

“Just a minute I need to put you on hold.” she asked. She came back and said “Ok it’s removed.”

“Great. Thank you very much!” I said. Click.

I will never again give anyone my email address no matter if that is a requirement to receiving a discount. I will just say I’m sorry to hear that and walk out. Why do business force something that a customer doesn’t want? That is not a good long-term customer retention strategy.

When I set up the iPad, it set the account up automatically for me based on my email address, etc. But I just ran across the fact that when it set up the account automatically, it used the “@me.com” suffix on the email address. I use the “@mac.com” suffix instead. For those not familiar with MobileMe, you can use either interchangeably in the email address.

But when doing a reply all, since the email address I normally use and the one in my account settings is different, it didn’t eliminate my email from “Reply All”. So I changed the account email address (actually had to delete and recreate the account) and all is well.

Although your stabs at the problem didn’t help me Doug, the one about the alias is similar to what the problem was and should have helped me, so I’ll mark that down as “Helpful”. Thanks!

It could be because of the icon cache filling up the space on it. You can read Allan Sampsons great solution here. “Create your MobileMe account on your iPhone and turn Contacts and Calendars on for over the air syncing with your MobileMe account settings on your iPhone. If you have a MobileMe account and are syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with your MM account on your iPhone, you don’t need to sync contacts and calendar events direct with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac via the iTunes sync process.

Try syncing iTunes content including the music, video, podcasts, and 3rd party apps you want transferred/installed on your iPhone, but don’t select anything under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences.

If no problems with this, try selecting the single iPhoto album you want transferred to your iPhone under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences. If the same error message is provided, this narrows it down to transferring photos only which means there is a problem with what is called the iPod Photo Cache, which can be deleted from iPhoto.”

and also: “You’re welcome.

This link includes instructions for removing the iPod Photo Cache from iPhoto. Doing so should resolve the problem.”

1. Tap the Settings icon and switch to airplane mode (just to make sure no other e-mails come in).

2. Still in Settings, Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap Fetch New Data and tap Push to “Off” and go back to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Tap “Preview” and change it to “None”. I think this was the solution because it prevented the problem e-mail from opening again.

4. Turn the iPhone off and then back on again just to make sure.

5. Open Mail.

6. Go to the inbox and look for the culprit “Mail Delivery Failure” message.

7. Delete it by sliding over it (don’t open it!).

8. Go back to the trash and and delete it again as in step 7.

9. Go back to your inbox – if it worked you will now be able to access your e-mail.

10. Turn off airplane mode and return your e-mail settings to the original settings.
