Squared 5 – MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac OS X. This is some excellent information if you need to configure MPEG-2 in Lion. Thanks Squared5!

The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.

If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard

Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).

If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard

You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.

If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.

If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for “QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg”: if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.

If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can’t find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on “Account” in the store menu, then click “Downloadable Software Purchases,” enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.

If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder’s Go menu > Go To Folder… command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

Do you get error code 0×80020022 when burning DVD/CD’s on your Mac?

I get \. Join the club. This is an issue for many people. Once when I worked at a mac design shop, no macs could successfully burn a DVD. It is pathetic. I ended up buying an external DVD burner for $150 that worked great. This has been an issue since 2005. Apple says try different disks from different manufacturers. Cheaper in the long run to just by an external drive that will burn all media.

Online Video Game Rental Review 2011 – TopTenREVIEWS

Online Video Game Rental Review 2011 – TopTenREVIEWS. Do you like to rent ps3 games but hate the prices charged by RedBox and others? I have a friend who loves to play PS3 games, so I often visit her and play two player games with her. She is trying a GameFly trial period and seems very excited. Has anyone used GameFly and what has your experience been?
A few years ago I used to go to BlockBuster and rent ps2 games. The selection was poor and when I asked about it, the employee said that the more that people rent the more they will offer. This seemed a circular argument to me. How can you rent stuff when they choose poor titles? I think what business often fail to do is to appreciate the passion of their audience. When they compete on just price, they miss the essential part of what the consumers of that segment want. I wouldn’t have minded paying a higher price for quality games that cost a little more new.

Thinking of upgrade Windows Home Server to 2011?

Windows Home Server

Time for an upgrade … « Sandy\’s. This is a fairly detailed review of this process. I shared these comments in that article.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It would be helpful if you shared the model number of your computer and where you bought the hardware. I am going to share this with my readers and often people like it when they have something they can walk-through and replicate.

What made you choose Windows Home Server in the first place? The ones I have seen were less than $1k. Was yours around that cost?

Amazon.com: Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro: Software. Why would someone spend almost $132 for toast 10 pro? It does a wide variety of tasks, not just burning to Blue-Ray. I can understand why PC users would buy this suite of programs. There is a newer version so no reason to buy this older copy.

Capitalism without a conscience

The unstoppable march of the tobacco giants – … – StumbleUpon. I understand that companies exist to make money, but at some point there has to be a conscience. If making money is the only goal, what does that say about your value as a human? It is no better than a cancer cell which only seeks to multiply. But in a sense, being a cancer cell would be more honorable. The virus does what it does because that is its existence/goal. I cannot believe that the goal for CEO’s and humanity is to kill others.

Thinking about this more, it should be illegal to sell cigarettes or alcohol to people who can’t read. Perhaps a UN law that states that before dangerous substances can be sold to someone, they first have to be able to read the warning in its entirety. If they can not, then they will not be allowed to purchase the object in question. How can a consumer be informed of the danger if they can’t read? I would say that selling to people who can’t read should be illegal for substances that are not food or medically necessary. They have to understand what they are buying, or else those industries can set up kiosks where they are educated and sign statements saying they understand the risks. Sounds harsh, but hasn’t ignorance what has allowed dangerous substances to be sold to the public?
