150 Free Textbooks: A Meta Collection | Open Culture. This is a great resource if you are looking for free online textbooks. Of course you can also check your local library or even ask if they could see if the book is available in other connected library systems. Often libraries share books with other institutions in the area in which they exist. I have featured this site before, and it is a rich resource.

By the way does anyone have a copy of “A survey of mathematics with applications 8th edition” they aren’t using or willing to part with for a small fee? I have a friend who could use it.

Are Books An Endangered Species? – Booked – Reading unbound – Forbes. This is hard to imagine that books are going out of style. Yes it is super convenient to read on a reader, but those of us who grew up with books think of them as something more than that. Books have a life of their own, and the pages that you turn are steps to building an imagination of their contents. I bet that if you tested someone on a fMRI that reading a book would give more pleasure than reading a reader.

Book Review: The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content. 9780307465351: Timothy Ferriss: Books

Amazon.com: The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content. 9780307465351: Timothy Ferriss: Books. This book is garbage. Don’t waste your life reading this. I don’t even want to waste my time(related link) writing about it. I wasted enough reading it.

Book Review: Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back 9781400066896: Douglas Rushkoff: Books

Amazon.com: Life Inc.: How the World Became a Corporation and How to Take It Back 9781400066896: Douglas Rushkoff: Books. Skip this book. It is riddled with historical, factual and logical errors. He is a good sophist but a terrible realist. You can’t take on as many targets as he did without more evidence. Everything is misleading including the title of this book. I couldn’t stand to finish it.

Book Review: Rework 9780307463746: Jason Fried, David Heinemeier Hansson: Books

Amazon.com: Rework 9780307463746: Jason Fried, David Heinemeier Hansson: Books. As one of the reviewers said if you just “Ignore conventional wisdom” you don’t need to spend 2 hours to read this book.  Any book that has more just a handful of negative reviews should be approached with caution.  I would avoid this book.

Book Review: Nobodies: Modern American Slave Labor and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy 9781400062096: John Bowe: Books

Amazon.com: Nobodies: Modern American Slave Labor and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy 9781400062096: John Bowe: Books. I thought this book was geared toward the middle class who may not have had experience with poor.  The majority of this book is unreferenced experiences with poor people.  While interesting, it does not shed a direction to the solution.  I thought this book was superficial.

Book Review: White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine 9780807061428: Carl Elliot: Books

Amazon.com: White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine 9780807061428: Carl Elliot: Books. This was an interesting book.  It is disappointing how people who are trusted with so much education and responsibility abuse it. I suppose that one of the risks of capitalism is that too many desperate people are willing to cut corners.  I wish that we as a society made compassion for others more important than money.
