Book Review: Measuring the Immeasurable – The scientific case for spirituality

This is a great introductory text to the ideas and research occurring in many fields.  While at times it was a bit heavy with references and perhaps geared toward a more professional audience at times, the many authors make this work accessible to many types of people.  You can read the positive Amazon reviews here.  It mentions epigenetic in several essays which I was previously unfamiliar with.

Book Review: Inside Cyber Warfare: Mapping the Cyber Underworld

This was a terrible book.  It didn’t have any information that wasn’t already available from other sources.  The writing was boring and didn’t enlighten decision makers.  For example its section on Conficker was pointless.  You can learn more from reading the Wiki page here.  You can read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Making Work Work: New Strategies for Surviving and Thriving at the Office

Some practical and useful strategies if you feel behind in the office.  This is a almost like having her consult with you on your personal style of working.  She had assessments and other tools to help you find direction and balance.  Amazon reviews are very positive as well.

Book Review: The Truth About Managing Your Career: …and Nothing But the Truth

If I had read this 10 years ago I would have saved myself a ton of frustration and lessons.  If you are an employee you should read this.  This is as helpful and much like 7 Habits of Highly effective people.  Specific strategies that you can apply to any business.  Find out the Amazon reviews here.

Book Review: Success Built to Last: Creating a Life that Matters

Learning things sometimes makes you question your own values/beliefs and this is a thoughtful book if you want to examine your own ideas of what success means to you.  It has interviews from some famous and not so famous people that might help you create a more meaningful life.  The Amazon reviews are here and positive.

Book Review: Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, A (5th Edition)

This is the single best Linux book I have ever read.  If you have been turned off before by the sometimes arcane nature of Linux/Unix, you will keep the pages turning in this one.  It took about 2 weeks for me to digest since it was around 1,000 pages.  What a worthwhile read it was.  It reminded me of things I have already done, and things that I can do to make things easier in the future.  Kudos to the author.  You can read the all positive reviews here at Amazon.

Book Review: The Cathedral & the Bazaar: Musings on Linux and Open Source by an Accidental Revolutionary

Honestly I couldn’t finish this book.  I like learning things and I like technology, but this was kind of dry and full of factual errors.  I am not exactly sure who would benefit from reading this book.  I’m not exactly sure what Guy Kawasaki was thinking when he made this quote that features prominently on the front of the book “The most important book about technology today, with implications that go far beyond programming.”  You can read the Amazon reviews here.

Apple Training Series: Mac OS X Security and Mobility v10.6: A Guide to Providing Secure Mobile Access to Intranet Services Using Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard

So this covers some material that has been covered many times before in other Apple Training Series books.  It has some good information on Mobile Access Server if you are thinking of implementing that.  Worthwhile to read.  Here is the Amazon review. No reviews at present.

Apple Training Series: Xsan 2 Administration: A Guide to Designing, Deploying, and Maintaining Xsan

This book was disappointing.  It didn’t have many pictures, and it didn’t have background tips or tricks that you would need to know.  It had the basic information you might get from Apple.  Not worth buying in my opinion.  See if your local library has it.  Some Amazon reviews here.

Book Review: How to Peel a Peach: And 1,001 Other Things Every Good Cook Needs to Know

This is a good basic review of some techniques to be a better chef.  Some of the advice directly contracts what world famous chefs hold.  For example she believes in trussing a bird, and using a garlic press.  High reviews on Amazon.

Book Review: 1001 Foods You Must Taste Before You Die

I thought this had some good foods that were uncommon, but there were many that were dangerous even poisonous if handled improperly.  In addition some foods are almost extinct which is a bit irresponsible to promote consumption of them.  You can read the Amazon review here.

Book Review: iPhone – The missing manual

Useful information.  More accessible than wading through some websites that cover the same info.  This should be required reading for all iPhone owners.  Want to see the Amazon reviews?

Used Book Review: Apple Confidential

Book Review: Mac for Linux Geeks

Don’t bother reading this 2009 released book. It doesn’t age well, and many of the contents are wrong and out of date.  For example he said “Mac OS X has the root user enabled by default.”  This is only true on the Server version, but not on the client version that he was discussing.  I have an earlier post to the Apple KB article that discusses the root user.  No reviews of it on Amazon.

Book Review: Apple Training Series: Mac OS X Server Essentials v10.6: A Guide to Using and Supporting Mac OS X Server v10.6

This had lots of great information if you have never worked with Mac OS X Server before.  It told you how to configure all of the services, and even showed the step by step procedures to do so.    I really like these Apple Training Series books.  Read the review at Amazon here.

Book Review: in Cheap we trust

This was a nice book that discussed the historical reasons for saving and spending in the US.  She gives Tiger Woods as an example of self control.  Oops! :)   Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Office 2008 for Macintosh

This is better for people who have been using Office for Mac for several years.  It might be too complex for someone new to this software.  Click here for the Amazon review.

Book Review: The Power of Respect

So this book is average in my opinion.  It wasn’t worth it if you have the basic reading of psychology.  It seems like speculation and nothing new is added here.  Here is the Amazon review.

Book Review: Working for You Isn’t Working for Me: The Ultimate Guide to Managing Your Boss

This is a great guide by a Harvard psychologist.  This is going to be useful in the future if I have any less than perfect supervisors.  Click here to read the Amazon review.

Super Staying Power: What You Need to Become Valuable and Resilient at Work

Ok.  I was hoping for specific strategies but this book claims to be “self help”.  I thought this material was better presented in other books like Emotional Intelligence.  There are currently no Amazon reviews on it here.

Book Review: Chicago a Biography

This has some nice pictures and explanation of Chicago’s history and growth.  I would have liked more pictures though.  Click here to find out it currently has no Amazon review.

Book Review: The Google Way

This book reads like an advertising copy.  More than one time it said “according to Marissa Mayer”.  Like a good journalist wouldn’t have mulitple sources for information.  Read more about it from Amazon here.  Google is not the only company doing these things.

Book Review: Discovering the Soul of Service: The Nine Drivers of Sustainable Business Success

This book felt like an advertisement for the brands inside.  Yes it does say some important things in the “old” economy or for MBAs.  It was written in 1999 and clearly shows it.  With the rise of the Internet it is clear that many of these lessons no longer apply as key aspects to sustainable success.  For example Generosity is one of its qualities.  I know many business that are very successful without being generous and have been for many years.  Until quite recently for example, Gates had given away less than 1% of his wealth and his business success climbed higher and higher.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Rich: The Rise and Fall of American Wealth Culture

I liked this book.  Parts of it were surprising like Puffy (Sean Combs) buying a $5000 BWM replica for his child to tool around in.  It really helped me to understand the whole idea of Beautiful People, Old and New Money and many other peculiarities of the rich.  It also mentioned a great book that I really like as well that I read in the past.  ”The Millionaire Next Door”.  So if you like one of these books, you will like the other.  Click here to see its high marks on Amazon.

Book Review: Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust

I couldn’t put this book down.  It was the single best book on learning to be influential online I have read.  I love it.  Everyone who is trying to be useful on the Internet should read this.  Click here to read the Amazon review.

Book Review: Economic Facts and Fallacies

This was an interesting book.  It has some nice historical contexts and perspective.  Reading each chapter did make you wonder and want a larger context to compare the numbers that were tossed about.  Perhaps some suggested light reading to help clarify the issues would have helped.  Click here to read the mostly positive Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Apple Training Series: Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.6: A Guide to Supporting and Troubleshooting Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard

This is a great book!  Lots of great information on Filevault and using OS X Server.  Click here to see the details at Amazon.

Book Review: The Future Arrived Yesterday: The Rise of the Protean Corporation and What It Means for You

I didn’t like this book.  He makes up words and talks about things in a way that has already been done before.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Pushing the Digital Frontier: Insights into the Changing Landscape of E-Business

This book was from 2001.  It had limited things to say that were said better by other books I have read.  Click here for the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: All Customers Are Irrational: Understanding What They Think, What They Feel, and What Keeps Them Coming Back

I thought this said some interesting things.  Reviews on Amazon are mixed.  Click here to see what they think.

Book Review: Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty.

I really liked this book.  It had great stories and facts.  It really opened your eyes to the multiple causes of Hunger in the world.  If you are concerned about issues of Justice and fairness, you will want to read this.  It can be hard at times to read this because of the reality of the situation for so many millions in the world.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: The Leap

I liked the free test that he listed in this book for the website http://www.primarycolorassessment.com.  Otherwise I feel the information wasn’t anything new.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: The Social Network Business Plan: 18 Strategies That Will Create Great Wealth

So this book said some interesting things.  I agree that some of this is useful, but it doesn’t really state the step by step required to accomplish this.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Green Living for Dummies

I didn’t like this book at all.  It copied content in the first chapter from the Green Computing for Dummies book!  Can’t they even come up with unique content?  Most of the books suggestions are obvious that have been made before.  Waste of time to read this.  Click here for the Amazon reviews.  Don’t buy any Dummies book people.  They are a waste.  I have never read one that taught me something that wasn’t available in 100 other places for free.

Book Review: Green Home Computing For Dummies

Ok I really wanted to like this book.  The suggestions that it makes are too time consuming and financially costly for the average person to have.  The people who most would stand to benefit from reducing their energy usage can’t afford half of this stuff.  It just seems so shallow when there are much better websites dedicated to this.  Click here to read the Amazon review.

Book Review: Cooking Green: Reducing Your Carbon Footprint in the Kitchen

Some of these suggestions are dangerous and the information is wrong.  This is an entry level book that needs more research.  I like the concept but I can’t trust it.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: The Mac is not a typewriter

This is a classic book by Robin Williams.  He makes some great points and especially good if you are responsible for design.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Coming Clean: Breaking America’s Addiction to Oil and Coal

The author of this book,  Michael Brune is the executive director of the Rainforest Action Network.  This is a great book if you are seriously into environmental action. Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Free the Future of a Radical Price

I thought this book said some interesting things.  The reviews on Amazon were mixed.  It is something to think about at least.  Some of the things he said were puzzling.  For example he spoke about Google PageRank.  Google said said years ago that PageRank is not as important as people think it is and to not focus on it.  Some other things he says is just bizarre.  If he is the lead editor, Wired needs an editor to edit him.  More fact checking would be good. Click here to read more opinions on it.

Book Review: The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s How.

I really liked this book.  It is perfect for anyone who needs to nurture talent.  Coaches, teachers anyone who works in the education or inspiration industries (life couch, therapist).  Great reviews on Amazon as well.

Book Review: The New World of Wireless: How to Compete in the 4G Revolution

This is a good book for the following audiences: CEO’s, iPhone developers, VC, marketing.  It explains the consequences of the switch to 4G.  Click here to read the reviews from Amazon.

Book Review: Rebound A Proven Plan for Starting Over After Job Loss

This is a really considerate and sympathetic view of Job Loss.  It has lots of great suggestions. I am glad I read it. Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Nerds 2.0.1 A brief history of the Internet

I thought this book was disjointed and repetitive.  Good thing I got it at the library.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Snow Leopard for Dummies

This is “TheDigitalLifestyles” review.  Click here to read.

Book Review: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal

This is really illuminating.  If you want to know about the hidden food that is wasted globally you should read this book.  AT a time when millions of people in the US are living with food insecurity it is a crime that this is allowed to occur.  Click here to look at it on Amazon.  There are no reviews for it there since it was just released.

Book Review: Mac OS X Snow Leopard Bible

This book is outstanding.  If your library doesn’t have it, you need to order it.  I learned many things from it.  They did their research!  Great Amazon reviews.  Its the first book that didn’t have anything less than above average or superior.  Click here to read  the Amazon reviews.

Book Review:The Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back

This book could be perceived by many as being “new age”, self-serving, and shallow.  I found elements of all three in here.  It references books by people who have a shallow understanding of Marketing.  I like the idea they have, but the presentation for me was boring and hard to swallow.  I was a psychology major in college and to me, this book feels more like a self-help book than a serious and insightful marketing book.  Click here to read the Amazon reviews.

Book Review: Twenty Ads That Shook the World: The Century’s Most Groundbreaking Advertising and How It Changed Us All

So the purpose of this book is to analyze the twenty ads that had a cultural significance.  Apples “1984″ ad is in here as well.  I thought he said some interesting things.  Click here to read the Amazon review.

Book Review: 101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site: Filled With Proven Internet Marketing Tips, Tools, Techniques, and Resources to Increase Your Web Site Traffic

Ok.  This book was written in the Fall of 2006.  Most of the information is out of date.  The information that is still applicable is only useful for beginners and not completely accurate.  If you have done web marketing for more than six months, you probably won’t find this book useful.  Here are the reviews at Amazon.  Click here.

Book Review: What’s the Big Idea?

This is George Lois who did many popular and well known advertising campaings in the 50s-80′s.  It is really interesting to read the history and thinking of his craft.  I would suggest this book if you like history, marketing or looking for one way to approach selling.  Click here for the Amazon review.
