Airport Express slow or showing a 169.x.x.x address?

You aren’t alone.  An extensive discussion of this problem and other experiences with Apple Express/Extreme hardware at this Macintouch thread. Sammy Banos is typical of people who had this problem and suggested a workaround:

I too updated my Airport Express to firmware 7.5.2 yesterday evening. I’m using the AE as “connected to an existant wireless network“, giving the AE a static IP adress. As you may have guessed, I too experienced the IP changed to the APIPA thing, ie 169.x.x.x.

After going through some forums it appears that this configuration (join wireless network, static IP) is the troublemaker… added to the performance issues other experienced.

My best advice is to stay away from that 7.5.2 firmware and expect Apple hear our pleas (their forum is already filled up on the problem) and release a corrective firmware.
For those who already upgraded, revert to 7.4.2, and you should retrieve the Airport you first loved.

How to reset the Airport Express

Some good guidelines here if you are new to this.  Thanks for the help Jolly Giant. “try a factory restore of the AX. pull it from power and use a paperclip or pointy object to press the reset button @ the back of the unit. keep it pressed, while you plug the unit back into the outlet, until the status light flashes amber rapidly (8-10 seconds).

when the AX restarted it will have created a new, separate network so airport utility (AU) won’t be able tosee it yet. click on the airport icon in your menu bar and look for apple network 11c3fg or similar. in order to set the AX up you will have to switch networks @ the prompt.

now AU should pick the AX up and you will be able to configure it as desired.”

Do you want to set Up a Relay Station with AirPort Express?

This is a great step by step tutorial that shows how to set up a relay station.  A relay station allows you to extend the distance of your network if you want to expand your wireless network.  This does tend to increase latency so may not be the best option if you are playing network games or some time sensitive application.
