Warren Shaw has a workaround.

Actually, there is a workaround.  If you turn of the option to Automatically Retrieve Track Names, load the CD and then under Advanced select Get Track Names, the behavor is then normal.  It seems as if the problem is only manifest if the disc is loaded and iTunes tries to retrieve track names at the same time.  At least, that is my experience…

i'm having an import issue. After importing, I am left with 4kb mp3 tracks that are essentially empty files that cannot be played. Any clues?

Thats interesting. Is that a new disk or used? If it is scratched I would suspect that your cd-reader is having a problem reading it. Can you try importing the cd from another computer with iTunes and then copying the data over? If the disk is new then it is a software issue. Try uninstalling anything that says Apple if you have a PC or trash the itunes preferences file if you have a mac. Then delete the trash, restart and try again.
