Ever watch old shows like Eight is Enough?

I’m watching that now on http://www.thewb.com and it’s really amazing. [Eight is Enough] You see in their slang, values and environment how limited they were by the times. I enjoy watching older movies and shows. It gives you a better perspective on where people are coming from, and what beliefs shape attitudes.
For example, the dad was uncomfortable with his wife working a job when it looked like he was going to lose his job at the newspaper. Even though he recognized this he said that he felt that it made him happy knowing that his wife was at home. He still believed that the mans desires were more important than his spouse. I don’t like the idea of winners and losers in relationships. I think that you can compromise and find solutions that can make you both happy. I don’t believe that love requires that you sacrifice to be happy.
Most importantly to me however is that some values to me are universal and helpful. Watching these shows you often see an appeal to those universal and helpful values when problems come up. I look for the universal recognition of shared humanity, not the particular values any artistic work has.
