Can’t sell a printer but can give it away

Anyone use the Craigslist Free section?  I put in an ad to sell a HP V40 inkjet printer for $25 and no takers after two weeks.  So I listed it as free and I had 4 people interested in the first 8 hours.  It required almost $100 in ink/power cable buy and it wasn’t worth it for me to rehabilitate it.  I suppose I could have sold it for more after I invested the money into it, but it’s not certain it would have sold.  So why not give it away?
