Is reputation important and why?

It makes sense that companies do a background check when they hire someone.  They are putting some trust in the person and deserve to know the truth.  I can see this authors point of view why some things might be overlooked and a more liberal work attitude prevails.  Being professional can mean so many things to people.  Is it when you follow all the laws, or when you have the values that the employer wants?  Once on a job interview the HR person asked what church I belonged to.  It was obvious if I didn’t answer the question I wouldn’t get the job.  I would have liked to find out her reputation before I interviewed.
