I highly recommend Ning if you're looking for something that is relatively easy to set up and maintain. I originally had a site that was created in Drupal and it was a nightmare because I'm not a particularly techie person. One thing I will say about the Ning apps is that many of them haven't really delivered in terms of performance. A number of them do not take into account the amount of control network creators need to have over the content on their sites. So for example, there's an app to create reviews (products, businesses, etc.) but if someone posts something that is not appropriate, there's no way for me to delete their review without deleting the entire app. Based on some of the ratings and feedback, I'm assuming this will be addressed in the near future, but in the meantime, it continues to be a problem. Also, the new apps are not visible on the homepage of the networks. Instead, they appear as tabs on the sites. Most of us would to put the apps (polls, feeds, etc.) front and center on the homepage, but right now, it isn't possible. Despite my issues with the apps, I'm very happy with Ning, the customer support and the functionality of my site. It's definitely worth checking out.
